Orange announces Mobile Connect, a secure authentication solution for accessing digital services from mobile devices

Orange is today announcing Mobile Connect, a new authentication solution designed to enable customers to use their mobile phone as a key to securely and easily log on to any digital service regardless of the device or network connection used. The solution is based on a highly-secure platform that uses the SIM card – which is already recognized for its inherent security - to validate entry into secure digital services. Mobile Connect is designed to respond specifically to the needs of consumers who increasingly have to manage multiple online or cloud-based accounts, each with different login names and passwords.

Both mobile users and service providers stand to benefit from this solution:

  • For customers, Mobile Connect offers a highly-secure but simple authentication solution using a personal code system or simple-click validation process for users to authenticate themselves via their mobile device. The solution is fully integrated in the mobile device and customer details are not used by operators and or shared with other third parties. Privacy and security is therefore preserved for customers.
  • Service providers will also benefit from the system, which offers a cost-effective, generic authentication mechanism. With more than 5 billion SIM cards distributed globally, a standardised SIM-based authentication solution could be rapidly deployed across all markets anywhere in the world. In addition, the Mobile Connect solution also provides a simpler and safer way to manage today’s multi-screen / multi-device environment. The solution is particularly relevant for certain sectors including healthcare, banking and government as it offers a highly-secure system that works on any device using a variety of security schemes.

In line with its commitment to providing customers with the highest possible level of security, Orange intends to provide Mobile Connect-based solutions across its footprint in Europe and in key markets in Africa and the Middle East by 2015.

Mobile Connect, a key pillar of the GSMA’s Personal Data Initiative

The Mobile Connect project is one of the main workstreams of the GSMA’s Personal Data Initiative. The programme, which is sponsored by Orange and is also supported by numerous operators, content providers and other industry players, aims to establish mobile operators as the trusted custodians of customers’ digital identity.

With around 65 per cent of all music listened to on Deezer via a mobile phone, Mobile Connect will help provide music fans with a seamless mobile experience as well as increased convenience across other devices.”

Olivier Piou, CEO of Gemalto said: “The unique security and versatility of SIM cards find another compelling use case towards protecting the access to Internet services. In order to best suit the needs of service providers, the SIM-based mobile identity solution works with any handset, whether a smartphone or a feature phone, and can be deployed over-the-air. Gemalto will embed the mobile connect applet in the ROM code of all new SIM cards at no cost for operators, once the GSMA standard is available. Mobile phones are ubiquitous and are to become the long-awaited “virtual” key to digital services. Catalonian healthcare service to benefit from first live test of Mobile Connect

A pilot project run through the Mobile Word Capital initiative in Barcelona and involving the GSMA, Orange, Morpho and the Catalonian healthcare service has also agreed to test the authentication mechanisms in a live environment.

The CEO of Fundació TICSalut, Dr. Francesc García Cuyàs, said: “I am glad to announce that the Catalan Personal Health Record service, which has a potential user base of 5 million citizens, will benefit from a Mobile Connect solution, enabling them to access their medical data and interact with healthcare professionals. I believe Mobile Connect is one of the key elements that will lead the future in mHealth. This will reinforce how citizens play an active role in managing their health. Orange, as a key player in mHealth, will facilitate access to medical records creating the adequate environment for new services and applications to be delivered to citizens.

The Director of the mHealth Competence Center at Mobile Word Capital, Dr. Joan Cornet added: “Secure access to personal health records is our priority. We are delighted that Orange and Morpho are paving the way, providing a simple and interoperable solution.”

Orange will be showcasing some of these solutions at the Mobile World Congress on the Orange booth (Hall 5, Stand 5A61) and on the GSMA’s booth, demonstrating different ways of applying Mobile Connect services for different sectors:

  • mHealth: a system enabling healthcare professionals to securely access patients’ records while on the move.
  • Orange Cloud Pro: secure access to Orange Cloud Pro.
  • Other areas include: mobile payment, bill payment, money transfer, parental authorisation and door-code access.
